Tongariro Crossing – New Zealand

This article shows you how to do the Tongariro Crossing. You will learn where to stay, what to pack and how best to complete the walk without a guide.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is rated as one of the best day walks in New Zealand if not the world. It is a must-do if you are on the North Island of New Zealand. The 19.4 Km hike passes over the volcanic terrain of an active volcano (Mount Tongariro).

It was less than 24 hours between deciding to do the hike and standing at the start line. We had the necessary shoes, supplies, and camera equipment. As the clock struck 9 am we set off along the track. This is considered a “late departure”, with most leaving around 6 am. This is to lower the risk of having to return to the start due to inclement weather.

We were recommended the following items after a review of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing Website:

  • Food and plenty of fluid, especially in the summer months. If you are planning on completing any of the summit tracks, ensure you have additional water supplies.
  • Waterproof and wind-proof raincoat and trousers
  • Strong, sturdy boots (you will be trekking over uneven volcanic terrain)
  • Warm clothing layers: woollen or polypropylene thermals and fleece
  • Hat and gloves
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • First Aid Kit
  • Map
  • Cellphone

What to eat on the Tongariro Crossing

Food options are fairly scarce in this part of the world. Your best bet is to buy your food from the local supermarket in National Park and then cook at your accommodation. There are a few pubs and restaurants in the area if you are too tired from walking too. Just check your google maps 🙂

Where to stay in National Park

We stayed at Pipers Lodge in National park at around $70 per night for 2 of us. Simple clean hostel-like accommodation with super friendly staff.

  1. Your photos look amazing. I would love to go here after reading your post. Thanks for some great tips on where to go

  2. The Tongariro Crossing is great hiking, we call this ‘tramping’ here in NZ ;-). But be aware it’s a hard 7-8 hours walk. So, the more fitness you have the more you will enjoy it! Also, watch the weather… it can change in a matter of 30 minutes.
